In December 1972 my sister Frances and her husband Liam were visiting our family home where I lived with my wife Marie our year old baby girl, my elderly parents and my youngest sister Geraldine age 15. I took my sister and her husband home to the far side of Belturbet , my sister Geraldine came with me as she wanted to get chips from the chipper on the way back. I doubled parked as I waited on her to come out of the chipper. A car bomb exploded Killing her and another young teenage boy 16yrs ( Patrick Stanley ) I thought I was after falling asleep and dreaming, when I came to I was half out of the car. The car in front of me and the one behind were on fire. I started shouting for Geraldine for I knew she was with me but I could'nt hear a sound of her. I looked at my car and I could'nt believe I came out of that alive, it was in bits only about 10 feet away from the car bomb . The Doctor and the Garda brought me in to identify Geraldine , then I was taking to the Hospital where I was treated for cuts and shock. A lot of others were injured to and the main street of Belturbet was devastated. I signed myself out of the Hospital for Geraldine's funeral. No one claimed the planting of this bomb and no one was ever brought to justice. Our family went on with our lives in shock and in silence as no one could talk about it , and with that came the after effects and problems through the rest of our lives.
