Citizens Advice Witness Service

5.0 1 Reviews

Overview

Giving evidence as a witness can be daunting and the court process can be complicated and difficult to understand. The Citizens Advice Witness Service provides free and independent support for both prosecution and defence witnesses in every criminal court in England and Wales.

Our trained volunteers provide practical information about the process, as well as emotional support to help witnesses feel more confident when giving evidence.

Following a referral, our national contact centre will make contact within two working days, usually by phone to discuss the support we can provide and assess what may be most beneficial for each individual witness. We provide support in advance of a trial in the form of outreach visits or pre-trial visits to the court to help prepare witnesses for what to expect as well as on the day of the trial where we provide a secure place for witnesses to wait and practical and emotional support.

The Witness Service cannot discuss the evidence, provide legal advice, assist with statements or provide updates on the outcomes of a trials.

Eligibility

All victims and witnesses, prosecution and defence in a criminal trial in England or Wales. This includes those affected by homicide.
